Mythical Creatures 101: Petites

Whether you see Secondlife (SL) as a game or an extended reality, the one thing that rings true is the anything is possible mantra. SL allows for people to exorcise demons or perhaps become one. From Vampires to Unicorns, there is no shortage of mythical creatures. Today, I learned about “Petites” or “Fae” as they have been called. Below is a short interview with Vanyi Resident with additional comments from HeartDrainer Resident on their experiences as petites.

EN: What is a petite?

VR: A petite is a mesh rendered avatar about a third of the height of the normal SL avatar. It is rigged to the same bones and has no seams where your joints meet. This is a major improvement as previously it was impossible to be small and not look like a doll.

EN: Hows does one become a petite?

VR: You would buy a ‘Petite Avatar’ package and put on the various pieces. There are a few approved vender’s you can buy from or you can buy directly from the creator, Yabusaka. He has published a note card that explains how you can customize your petite avatar with your own full perm skin.

The approved skin creators that I have seen so far are Skinthesis, Fallen Gods, Al Vulo!, and Hot Dive.

EN: Do petites have a community or petite sims?

VR: We have a group that was made to help new petites find vendors and places that they can go to be petites without the worry of getting stepped on. Only vendors who have been approved to sell to the group can put out notices and there is a long waiting list to gain that status.

The main creators of the Petites also made a special Petite store called the ‘Petite Kingdom’. Here you will find products from some of the best designers in SL as well as land marks to other approved vendors. Make sure you visit them all as there is limited space at the kingdom but there are many creators that have been approved as vendors.

EN: How did you come to be a petite?

VR: My SL sister and long time friend, Riven, drooled over the Fallen Gods Petite Avatar until we could buy it. It was so cute that I just couldn’t resist going little with her. Our other sister, Fia, followed shortly after.

Rivvy has always been a tiny. We all knew that it was only a matter of time before someone put out a miniature mesh form. She was beyond excited when she learned that one of our most favorite creators was doing skins for it and I think the excitement rubbed off on the lot of us. Even my SL Partner has gone Petite.

EN: Are there any specialized items petites need – Huds, AO’s etc..

VR: I use a Pixie AO that is meant for little people. I swirl about in the air and bob up and down. You can use your regular AO with the form but I have found with some that your steps end up being a bit longer than your little legs should really be able to move you.

You can resize a lot of the prim clothing and hair out there to fit you specifically. A resizer script can be found free at the petite kingdom or you could purchase one from the Market Place.
An undeformer is also useful, it will help you switch from petite form to biggie with more ease. One can also be found amongst the freebies at the petite kingdom.
You can also opt to get a camera hud that will give you a world view from the size of the petite but this is not required to enjoy the avatar.

EN: Tell me about the petite items you create and sell .

I create tattoos and clothing for the petites. My sister Riven specializes in furniture and homes. She occasionally makes outfits. My other sister, Fia, also makes homes and accessories to go with them. We have all been very inspired to create for the Petites.

EN: Share any additional comments about petites or becoming one

VR: Builders should beware: When in petite form you are bound to crash when you attempt to manipulate and create prims. I do not know why, or even if it is a fixable issue. But it does happen so do not be surprised.

EN: Tell a bit about your creations

HR: I make several items. One of my first outfits for petites was a Neko outfit. Super Cute. With little click able ears and tons of accessories. It comes in 8 Colors.

Then I thought it would be a good idea to make some eyes. I love big Dolly eyes so I decided that it would be go to make some of those and some cat eyes.

I have wanted to make Bottle Cap Jewelry for a long time so I decided it would be great for the petites. Not done with all my ideas yet still more to come.

Being part of the Petites is pretty awesome. Their are so many possibilities.  The Petites are very versatile. I see them growing stronger.
